House Of Joy. It's a house (duh, as said by the name of it), is a non-profit home that provides shelter and care to children that are less fortunate, neglected, abused, and abandoned. The house have been established since 1st August 1992 by Rev Tang Chee Sing and his wife Lee Ching Mun. Apart from it being a children's home, shelter and care are provided to underprivileged old folks as well.

In a nut shell, House of Joy aims to reach out to these needy people, as well as to cultivate an in-depth worth of change for them. Therefore, love, education, counselling and transformation are thrust among the children and teenagers as so that, they will be nurtured to useful adults and ready to take up life hardships.

So far, interns from China have been to House Of Joy to bring up the children there by educating them as well as being a pillar of support for them emotionally and physically.

So. What's next in store for House Of Joy? Stay tuned to find out!

Rumah Shalom.

The house is located at Puchong, a 20 minutes drive from Talylor's Lakeside University.

Dating back to 1997, it was set up then to provide shelter for children. The children there came from all walks of life, mainly those who were raised by single mother's and came from broken homes. The children there are as young as 4 years old and the shelter will accommodate them till the age of 19.
Reverend S. Arulandu, or better known as Pastor Arul brought up Rumah Shelter. The intuition that initiated him to start up the shelter was a flashback of the time when he met some children that were mischievous and up to no good, some that were into petty crimes. Most of the people he knew gave up hope on those kids and couldn't be bothered much about the kids.

However. Pastor Arul sees them in a different light.

He actually talks to them and tries to understand them. He believes that there is something good beneath every single child, it's just that they were brought up in a harsh and different environment, which is the reason why they were brought up and act differently from other kids. Basically, they were just misunderstood by the society and hence, they were not given the opportunity to prove themselves that they are better than what people percepts them to be.

Naturally, Pastor Arul have a passion for children, to educate them regardless of where they came from, so that they can grow up to be better people. So that is how the home was set up and it's already been providing the children care as well as education, to teach them self-worth and to be better citizens.

Recently, a few of the Project Management team members visited the shelter. Most of the older children there were really friendly and introduce themselves, while the younger ones were quite shy and look timidly at us. We manage to warm things up by talking to them and playing Uno cards.

Then, we met up with Pastor Arul and chit chat with him about Rumah Shalom while he goes through the Memorandum of Understanding. There is a certain light that ignite in him when he talks about the children and one can see from there how much is his love for them, especially when he talks about how he brings them up. It sure did made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside :)

As we were leaving the place and saying bye to the children, I can't help but feel happy that I made someone's day that day just by making them smile and laugh when we played Uno :)

Cultural Day

On 2nd of August, the children in PPKKCTM have just experienced different culture and custom of several countries in a day! This day, the children went Kazakhstan, United Kingdom, United Stated of America, Hong Kong and Taiwan without leaving Malaysia, and this day is known as cultural day.

In the afternoon, the international volunteers have display their country related item, such as flag, country’s background, tourist attraction spot and more through presentation form and also display physical goods. When the children visited their station, the volunteers will explained in detail to the children to allow them to understand country beyond Malaysia. They shared their country’s food with the children so that the children can have a taste of it instead of showing them pictures. They also display some of the traditional costume and the miniature of their traditional house.

Through the cultural day, the children in PPKKCTM not only able to expand their geographical knowledge beyond the horizon, but to expose different tradition and culture that displayed by these international volunteers. Not only that, these international volunteers also able to sharpen their presentation and communication skills. Cultural day is definitely a meaningful event that benefits everyone!

Story Telling Competition

25th July 2009 is the day for the children in PPKKCTM to shine!! This day, these children are prepared to show their talent in front of all the audience because it is story telling competition! The objective of the story telling competition is to build up the confidence for the children by standing in front of the crowd and tell a story. Besides, the children able to sharpen their presentation skills and not to forget their ability to write a story on their own to show their creativity!

For the past few weeks, the international volunteers have put in lots of effort in teaching and assisting the children in English subjects. Throughout the past few weeks, many exercises have been done. From these practices, the children learned new vocabularies and correct grammars and with their utmost creativity, they prepared their own speeches.

After the well preparation and guidance from the international volunteers, it is the time for the children to share their story. Every participant has given out the best of themselves and they received the warm appreciation from the crowd. The winners of story competition have received prizes to serve as the motivation and encouragement. It was a great learning experience for the children, as they learn and grow. The judges, who consist of PPKKCTM’s learning advisors and visitors, were impressed with the learning progression of these children. Quoted from one judge, Mr Morhan “they have improved drastically since the last time I saw them” and the director of PPKKCTM, Mr Cheah also regard TOMORROW as the project that maximize the children’s capability and improvement.

The story competition was a success event, as we witness the children’s development in all area such as personal development and their English command. It was a great pleasure to know that TOMORROW assist the children in these essential areas as we serve back to TOMORROW’s mission of creating “A Colourful TOMORROW for the Children of Today”!

AIESEC TUC recently celebrated the 1st anniversary of their own Project Based on Exchange (PBoX), ‘TOMORROW’ on 3rd July 2009 at Lecture Theatre 4, Taylor’s University College . TOMORROW is a child’s rights community based project at a local orphanage, Pusat Penjagaan Kanak-kanak Cacat Taman Megah. TOMORROW aims to develop the orphan children into high achieving and self-motivated individuals. International volunteers from various countries participate in this project by conducting daily tutoring sessions with the children and facilitate in educational activities.

TOMORROW’s 1st anniversary was supported by Ms Angela Pok, Senior Manager of Student Affairs of Taylor’s University College, Mr Cheah Siong Nyin, Trustee of PPKKCTM and Mr Richard Tong, TOMORROW’s learning partner and other 45 stakeholders. This event highlighted various passed event such as story telling competition, motivational camp and other achievements to the new stakeholder, besides recognizing the effort of the team who worked and organized those events. For one year, TOMORROW had done a tremendous job in developing the children both academically and emotionally. Many events were organised to motivate and encourage the children to better individuals. One of the events organised was story telling competition which aims to improve the communication and linguistic skills of the children. Apart from that, inline with our vision to develop children into high achieving individuals, a motivational camp was held at Berjaya Hills Gold and Country Club, Bukit Tinggi. The motivational camp was the main event of TOMORROW 2008 and we are extremely grateful the motivational camp instilled positive characteristics in the children. The children not only experienced a new and better learning environment but also were even more motivated to strive for excellence in their life.

“TOMORROW had definitely made a big impact in the children’s lives, in academic and discipline”. As told by Mr Cheah Siong Nyin, Trustee of PPKKCTM, the children improved wholly especially in their academic performances since TOMORROW started. The children received ample attention and guidance from the international volunteers to produce good grades in school. With the love and passion showered to them by the international volunteers, the children felt more secure and belonged thus allowing them to express and show their true potential openly.

The backbone of the TOMORROW is the international volunteers. The international volunteers’ commitment and dedication towards TOMORROW has ensured the project to be a huge success. The current international volunteers find it extremely rewarding to tutor the children and make changes to their lives. They felt humbled watching the children’s happiness despite the fact the children are alone and parentless. The international volunteers chose to be part on the main project mainly to be in close contact with children to help them improve themselves.

Gulchera from Kazakhstan has been actively involved in charity and fund raising events for children in her country. Her passion for children was the main driver for her to participate in TOMORROW. Other international volunteer like Emily from Hong Kong loves to be surrounded by children due to their contentment and laughter. An aspiring teacher from United Kingdon, Gideon hopes TOMORROW is able to provide him with strong teaching skills before he begins his career as a teacher soon.

We hope with endless support from the team, international volunteers, AIESEC and the public, project TOMORROW will continue to grow to become a bigger and more notable community service project. Together we hope to build “A Colourful TOMORROW for The Children of Today.

Quote from Malaysia’s Vision 2020:
“… every child born should be brought up in a healthy environment, provided with all necessary protection against diseases, receive proper nurturing, care and affection, receive general and higher education as far as possible, receive appropriate skills in necessary fields, imbued with cultural and human values”.

According to Ministry of Education, Malaysia cited by UNICEF Malaysia, two of the many issues concerning children are listed below:

(a) Low school achievement rates.
(b) Shortage of parental time for child-rearing and care of young children which lead to the lack of quality services for early childhood care and development.

The issues addressed above are issues ordinary children in Malaysia would face. However, these problems are far more significant among orphans who do not receive guidance from their parents.

Yes, we are very concerned with the current facts and feel an urgency to bring changes to the lives of these children. Aren’t you? Let us work together to building a colourful ‘TOMORROW’ for the children of today.

Vision
Developing orphan children into high achieving and self-motivated individuals through the improvement of their academic results, time management and communication skills, and better self-confidence in achieving as much as their peers if not more and be brave in facing the society for a colourful ‘TOMORROW’.

July 4th is a historical day for AIESEC TUC as it is the birth of our first PboX. It was named Tomorrow which symbolizes the mission and vision it carries; for a better future for the children of today. It represents hope. A hope for every child and a chance for each one of them to develop themselves into self motivated individuals.

It started out with a welcome speech from the emcees Ms. Cecilia Woon and Ms. Julie Kuan. Of course with more speeches from the Provost of Taylor’s University College, Mr. Lim Tou Boon followed by Mr. Andrew Lee the Advisor of AIESEC in TUC as well as Ms. Tan Sook Theng our Local Committee President and of course Ms. Angelina Ha the Organising Committee President.

All of us are thrilled and excited that the project we have been working on for months is finally kick starting. It was indeed for a good cause and also a time for us to give back to the society. This project has taught us the values of being sensitive to our surroundings as well as to highlight the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

The interns or what we called them our Angels was present on the memorable evening. Each of them states their mission and goals of joining us to help the children. These young roving youths has promised to give the children as much as possible. However, this project is not only aimed for giving as these youths will also learn from the children in return. At that brief moment, we have silently vowed to give our best to these kids.

The ceremony ended with the bursting of colourful ballons. It is the beginning of a brighter tomorrow; a rainbow of new hope.

Cooking Day

We had a very interesting weekend.

On Saturday, 19^th July, we had our very first event for PboX which is Cooking Day. Finally, the day has come for the Angels to show off their culinary skills.

Here’s a brief rundown :

10-11am Arrival of Guests

11-12pm Children begin drawing the dishes

12-1pm Presentation of dishes by the cooks

1pm Bon Apetit!

Cook: Amber

Dish: Baked honey sweet potato dessert and also nian gao wrapped in wanton skin.

According to Amber, nian gao is usually prepared during Chinese New Year as a symbol of prosperity.

Cook: Eric

Dish: Deep fried dumplings and spring rolls (it’s prepacked because Eric can’t cook, good effort though)

According to Eric, during Spring festival, dumplings and spring rolls are one of the main dishes prepared for the celebration.

Cook: Nina

Dish: Apple Pie and Pancakes. She also brought some mini Stroopwaffles and licorice from the Netherlands.

According to Nina, apple pie is sweet with a tinge of cinnamon. Whereas, the pancakes are eaten with pancake syrup.

Cook: Rabbit

Dish: Ma Po Tou Fu and Yangzhou fried rice

According to Rabbit, Ma Po Tou Fu originates from Sichuan Province in China. The tou fu is a little spicy and delicious. The fried rice is yummy with mix vegetables, eggs and shrimps which gives it a fragrant smell.

Today Eu Gin took us to the karaoke. Much alike the ones in Taiwan, and there are even many popular songs that are sung by Taiwan singers. I found something interesting about the cultural differences. As for Nina, since she’s a Dutch girl, in her country there are many karaoke bars. Many people were drunk and they will sing on the stage. That is to say, they will sing before many strangers. Compared with European, Asia people prefer to sing in one small room with friends.

The EPs were brought to visit 20 primary school children that they will be taking care of.

We had general introduction before everyone was breaking into groups to get closer to their 'teachers'.

This is Amber and her kids. She will be taking care of children in Standard 1 & 2 for the first week.

EPs on the Run Reloaded

Time has come for the chosen ones to reveal themselves. This time of the Month we will be facing our worst fears. There will be a mission, a war for Tomorrow to save our future. To all comrads and civilians, we will now announce the warriors that will joining this fight for the children of Tomorrow.

Our first agent, he thinks Chinese Kungfu is Cool, Chinese chess is Intellectual... Meet Eric from China, our Economics expert will be giving us insights on Chinese culture. He plays football and chess. So he will be offering us lots of strategy to win this war.

Alongside with him we will meet his assistants or what we call them Angels of Tomorrow. We can tell that these charming beauties are not only on the surface but also full of skills.

The 'cheesehead', Nina our specialist in Business Studies from Amsterdam. She has psychic powers. Don't mess with this lady or you'll be stuffed with cheese. Did I mention that she enjoys cooking too. Weight watchers! Prepare to be Fattened up. Nina will also captivate your heart with her sexy melody from the Saxaphone.

Of course in the area of technology we have our advisor in Computer Science, Amber. Just like her name she has a warm and soft spot for kids. She has volunteered in Nepal to help the poor. She will be sharing her insights on her experience in Nepal.

Finally, our guardian of tiny creatures, Rabbit. Nope she is not a rabbit. She is Rabbit. In fact, a German speaking rabbit. This is no joke. Our Rabbit here actually Majors in the German language. Be amuse!

Motivational Camp 2008 at Berjaya Hills

In TOMORROW 2008, motivational camp was organized with the purpose of developing and boosting up the skills of 24 children from Pusat Penjagaan Kanak-Kanak Cacat Taman Megah (PPKKCTM), from the range of age 5 to 16, in a very proactive and interactive methond in a very conducive environment. Courtesy of Berjaya Group Bhd., a 3-day 2 night motivational camp, from 8th of August till 10th of August, was successfully organized at Berjaya Hills Golf & Country Club for these wonderful children along with 1 teacher, 2 interns from China and Netherlands, and 9 AIESECers from Taylor’s University College.

Five fun-filled but moral valued activities were conducted by the interns with the aid of AIESECers were conducted indoor. Through these activities, the children learn to grab every opportunity in life, friendship and supporting each other, teamwork and creativity. Also, the children were exposed in competitive environment, portraying the real world, exposing them that life is not easy and that they have to work hard for it.

Not only they had lessons and games indoor, a number of captivated outdoor activities were planned for the children, namely swimming and visits to Rabbit Farm and French Village (Colmar Tropicale). These activities consist fun which is something that the children need and also, to expose the children to the nature.

Besides games, the children also shaped up their individual development. They are trained to be more as they need to keep their own things that have distributed and not to misplace their things such as stationeries and water bottle. The elder children also took up the responsibility in guiding and helping the younger ones through out the camp. They are also trained to be more discipline when it comes to meeting time and games.

The aftermath of this camp was both adults and the children learn from each other. They are having a wonderful time at Berjaya Hills Golf & Country Club as the environment is conducive and the meals are great. These children enjoyed the activities and the venue organized for this motivational camp, and they are very excited and looking forward to the next motivational camp from us.

The Battle for TOMORROW - 2008

Like what most Senior AIESECers in TUC do, they went missing after stepping down from the Executive Board. However, I am an exception for that.

Back in the year 2007, when my term as a Vice President of Human Resource almost ended, I was in a deep thought whether or not I should continue my term in 2008. I looked back on what I had contributed to AIESEC in TUC during my term and was not satisfied. I wanted to do more. However, in AIESEC, it does not mean that you can contribute ONLY if you are in the Board. You are able to contribute back to your LC even if you are merely a member! The best thing is AIESEC gives more opportunities to members than those in the Board. Therefore, it was then I decided to step down to be known as a de facto Director as well as senior AIESECer.

As a senior AIESECer, I can see a lot of opportunities waiting for me to grab. Opportunities will not come to you if you are not taking the initiative to look for them. This year, like any other Local Committees in Malaysia, AIESEC TUC is taking up its very first initiative. We will be running ‘Tomorrow’, a Project Based on Exchange. I took up the courage to take up Organising Committee President position.

Obviously, there will be tons of obstacles waiting for me, since it is LC TUC’s first battle, but I am not afraid as I am not alone. A team of 9 soldiers, CP9 (it is just a name), are joining this battle along with me and back in our headquarter, we have our strong Colonel Tan Sook Theng along with her 10 loyal Lieutenants to support us.

Therefore, hereby, it is my honor to introduce my soldiers to all of you:

1. Corporal Vincent Xu
Two words; hyper and committed.

2. Corporal Dixon Khoo
A person who knows how to differentiate between war time and fun time. A very approachable and friendly as a puppy, so afraid not. Do approach him to share his weapons and provisions. However, a lazy fellow due to being ‘slow’ in nature, but will be able to complete given mission in crisis in time.

3. Corporal Lim Eu Ginn
A soldier who is NOT a perfectionist as he believes that nothing can be done to perfection. Taking the first step and showing commitment during the process is more important compared to achieving the ‘perfect’ end product (roger that!). He embraces failures but stated that failure is not the opposite if success. The opposite of success is ‘giving up’ the moment one tastes failure.

4. Private Michelle Wong Ching Yee
She seems to be a “quiet” person but once she got on hold of machine gun, she will shoot non-stop. She can be straight forward and well, everyone has weaknesses so, there is no exception for her. If you find her irritating, let her know (or you won’t be able to accomplish your mission) as she is very willing to improve in her battle skills and that she will try her very best to change to suite your battle strategy.

5. Private Ng Mann Dee
This female soldier is approachable when she is unarmed, critical when she is armed and she has never parted with her walkie-talkie but guess what? She used to work part-time as a clown. It can be one of our strategies to deceive our enemies!

6. Private Wong Kong Hui
This is a very humble soldier who claimed himself to be an ordinary and easy-going person. C’mon! You are no longer ordinary once you joined this army. Anyway, he hopes to learn from the rest of the soldiers in this team so soldiers, do share your battle experiences and skills with him. We need to support and help each other in order to grow together.

7. Private Vivian Kuan
A very optimistic and perfectionist female soldier of ours who seeks for joy in everything (wonder if she enjoys battles) because she view it as a necessity. She likes shiny stuff (she will be our last option to design our uniform) and that for her, dance is love (how about marching?).

8. Private Timothy Low
Claimed to be an ordinary soldier with the intention to help out AIESEC TUC in the PBoX and that he is very looking forward to working with all of us (Worry not, soldier, our team is very diversified and rest assure that you will definitely learn a lot from us. How about dancing from Private Vivian?).

9. Private Vincent Lim
Opposite to our aforementioned Corporal Lim Eu Ginn, when it comes to serious work, this soldier is almost a perfectionist. He enjoys hanging out and battling with people (be extra cautious when you are armed).
